What should I do if my competitors are using webspam techniques?

Today's question comes from HoodRiver, where lisawilliams wants to know, "White hat searchmarketers read and follow Google guidelines.

What should they tell clientswhose competitors use black hat techniques such as doorwaypages and whom continue to rank as a result ofthose techniques?" So first and foremost, I wouldsay do a spam report.

Because if you're violatingGoogle's guidelines in terms of cloaking or sneaky JavaScriptredirects, buying links, doorway pages, keywordstuffing, all those kinds of things, we do wantto know about it.

So you can do a spam report.

That's private.

You can also stop by Google'sWebmaster forum, and that's more public.

But you can do a spamreport there.

You can sort of say, hey,I saw this content.

It seems like it's rankinghigher than it should be ranking.

Here's a real business, and it'sbeing outranked by this spammer, those kindsof things.

There are people who keep aneye on that forum, not just Google employees,but also sort of superusers or bionic posters.

And they can also passthose reports on.

So there are a lot of differentways to report specific incidents of spam.

The other thing that I wouldsay is if you look at the history of which businesseshave done well over time, you'll find the sorts of sitesand the sorts of businesses that are built to standthe test of time.

If someone is using a techniquethat is a gimmick or something that's like the SEOfad of the day, that's a little less likely toreally work well a few years from now.

So a lot of the times, you'llsee people just chasing after, OK, I'm going to use guestbooks, or I'm going to use link wheels or whatever.

And then they find, oh, thatstopped working as well.

And sometimes it's becauseof broad algorithmic changes like Panda.

Sometimes it's because ofspecific web spam targeted algorithms.

But it can also bethe case that we can crack down on even large companies.

If you go back and look at theNew York Times articles about JC Penney or Overstock, we'rewilling to take action on anything that we considerto be a violation of our guidelines.

So my short answer is go aheadand do a spam report.

You can also report it in theforums.

But it's definitely the case that if you're takingthose higher risks, that can come back and bite you.

And that can have amaterial impact.

So I would recommend that peopleavoid going with the black hat techniques.

And we're happy to hear, we'rehappy to get feedback either at conferences, on Twitter,online, blogs, forums, if you're seeing sites that areprospering and are using black hat techniques.

Now, it's possible that theyhave some low-quality links, and there are some links thatpeople aren't aware of that we see that are actuallyhigh quality.

But we're happy toget spam reports.

We're happy to dig into them.

And then we'll try to findeither new algorithms to try to rank the things moreappropriately in the future.

Or we're certainly willing totake manual action on spam if it's egregious or if it violatesour guidelines.

We have a manual web spam teamthat is willing to respond to those spam reports.

It's a lot of different sort of ways to put a publishingand publishing�a little bit�may be a content publisher.

There are different words, digitalcontent creator.

Okay is there a lot of that work around? Isit a kind of hot thing right now?� It is, everybody wants to be the top whenit comes to search.

So if can find somebody that really understands the terms and searchto use and the content to create to make sure their company is being looked out first comparedto the competitors, hands down.

Those people are needed.

Alright cool thank you that makes sense to me as a sort of an SEO job description ifyou will.

So let's keep talking about search engine marketing as a career as a say longterm freelance what kind of numbers are we looking at here? What kind of money can youearn? Wow so you know someone it depends on exactlythe job because sometimes it may be more copy heavy or may be sometimes more�social mediaheavy and understanding those two things can kind of vary.

I would say anywhere in thatlike 30-50 an hour is reasonable.

Certain clients want to higher level and may be afew more things they want somebody that can code as well or understand paper click orhave some experience in that area so might bump up a little bit more of that 40-70.

Sojust kind of depends on the client.

And what kind of if you will portfolio wouldyou need to get a search engine marketing job?You know any sort of samples from you know past jobs or something would be showcasingmay be a company or client you worked for, may be that content and may be those results.

So anything quantitative would be great.

It's like you grow that side of it from 40% to80% or you got a click through at a certain amount showing numbers is very very importantso if you get show how something was originally before you got it and result once you workedwith it that's what they going to want to see.

They want to see the results.

So anysort of numbers is great.

If you have visuals that's great.

If you are a writer on top ofthat being able to showcase that writing inside that's important too.

How do you price your SEO Services?

So I want to talk about how do you price SEOservices? Now, I have tried selling SEO services inthe past and I think I have made a few mistakes.

I have always tried selling SEO as a monthlyretainer package at the fixed cost say $500 a month or $2000 a month.

But over the last couple of days, I have beengiving it a second thought because I have not been happy with the way things are priced.

It just did not make sense to me because SEOrealistically when you get down to a project, initially, upfront there is a lot more workthan when there is, when you set things up and you got a process in place.

But the first few months always there is alot more planning, there is a lot more brainstorming, there is a lot more strategic direction thatyou need to set for you, your team for the client, you need a lot more research architecture,analysis, keyword page mapping etc.

So, there is a lot more work that is requiredupfront.

So, I don’t know how many of you are doingthis but I think SEO should be priced in two components.

Initially, the first, so like what I havedecided to map out a pricing strategy is like the first 3 months there will be an initialupfront investment which will be, for an example, we have a basic plan in which the initialupfront investment is $4000 which covers the first 3 months of work and then subsequentlyfor the remainder of the 9 months of the contract it would monthly, say $500 or $750, or whateverpricing you might decide.

But the idea that I am trying to sell outhere is, I think when you are selling to clients, you have to communicate not only the valueof SEO, that’s a given, you got to communicate that SEO does take time and you need to educatethem on the potential ROI upside of how much they could gain from standing to rank forthe terms that they are looking to rank for.

But you have to communicate that the pricing,if you force yourself into pricing it that way you’re going to be forced to also tellthem why there is an initial upfront investment.

And that I think, will be an easier way tosell because SEO does take time and the time that you have put in upfront, the thoughtprocess.

If you actually list out all the things youneed to do upfront and share with them, that okay I need to do a keyword research, I needto go through entire site, come up with a good plan for your site architecture.

I think when you talk through all of themin layman’s language and make them think and make them realize that there is a lotof time and effort that goes upfront and that justifies the upfront costs, it makes moresense for you because you are incentivized to also close the deal and you are not unhappylike I use to be in the past that we close deals for nominal monthly amounts.

But if a client did not go through on thefull 12 months contract, we would end up may be losing some money because we actually putin a lot more time initially.

So, I think if you price my idea of at leastpricing SEO services should be that you should have initial upfront investment and then subsequentlybreak down into monthly, a monthly retainer which could be any amount that you choosedepending on the level of service that you offer.

So, yes that’s just my thought and I thinkSEO can be better sold and you are forced to justify the investments upfront becauseyou’re going to have to communicate what you are doing, why you are doing it and actuallymakes you incentivize enough to actually spend a lot more time upfront because if SEO iswell planned well thought out, well strategized, you are going to do much better job and ifyou get that much more money going to drive you to perform better.

So, yeah so that’s my thought process ofhow you should price SEO proposals – initial upfront investment and then subsequent monthlypricing, that’s something you should consider for your future client deals.
