What is White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO?

My name's Alec Sharratt, and I'm a searchspecialist here at Koozai.

Today I'm going to be talking a little bit aboutwhite hat and black hat SEO.

In order to understand the difference betweenthose two aspects of SEO, I think we first need to understand a bit moreabout where Google is coming from.

Google is primarily a search engine,and they deliver search results to their end user.

It is the relevancy ofthose search results that has made them king of the search engines.

They'rethe most relevant search engine for what most people are looking for.

So in order to protect this relevancy andultimately their profits, they've created a set of guidelines, and these guidelinesare freely available for any company or website that are out there.

They just list dos and don'ts about what you can do or shouldn't do on yourwebsites.

Now these rules are just rules.

They're Google's rules.

They'renot laws.

There's no prison sentence associated with breaking one of Google'srules.

But there are quite stiff penalties, which can be devastatingto an online business.

It's in this set of guidelines that arisesthe difference between white and black hat SEO.

White hat SEO, simply put,follows Google's guidelines.

They don't break or bend the rules.

Whereas, blackhat SEO techniques will break the rules or bend the rules.

And as such,the fundamental differences between the two become more apparent.

Whitehat SEO is associated with little to no risk at all.

If you follow theguidelines appropriately that Google have sent, you're not going to getany sort of penalty or penalization from Google.

If however, you use black hat techniques,you do run the risk of being penalized.

Now penalization can take the formof being wiped from Google's index, and this simply means that you no longerwill be able to be found within Google, or at least your website won'tbe found within Google.

This can be a devastating and fatal blow to anonline marketing strategy or company's business and can result in the lossof a lot of money generated from online resources.

So, really, this riskis the fundamental difference that separates white hat and black hat SEO.

Now there are a number of different techniquesthat can be used in both quarters, and some are more clever or moresubtle than others.

With regards to black hats, there are techniques that youcan implement that may result in a website not being caught by Google fora very long time, if at all.

Although their search engine robots are veryclever at discovering black hat techniques.

To give you an idea or an example of the differencebetween a white hat and a black hat technique, let's take the useof keywords on page.

White hat SEO will use keywords on a page to build therelevancy for that page to that keyword.

Black hat will use keyword stuffingwhere the keyword will be used over and over and overagain on a page.

With regards to off page activities, link building, forexample, used by many white hat SEO consultants, you get links from otherwebsites on the Internet that essentially promote your website.

Black hatwould use link farms or buy links from other websites, and this is definitelyagainst Google's guidelines.

Now the pros of using white hats or blackhat SEO, I think, can become a bit more apparent.

White hat, the pro is reallya lack of risk.

There is no risk involved in your website being bannedfrom the index.

But black hat has a different pro, and that is that youcan get results very, very quickly, and depending on the industry thatyou're in, this may be more relevant to what you're actually trying toachieve.

If, for example, you're in an industry where people use a sort ofrinse and repeat black hat technique, they create a website, use blackhat to optimise it, get results, make profit, get banned from Google,and then create another site and do the same thing all over again.

Thiscan go on forever essentially.

But you're not really going to get the benefitthat you get out of a long- term online marketing strategy.

So, whitehat is a very stable and long- term source of generating revenue, whereasblack hat is a very immediate way of doing that and also carries this highrisk.

So there is the fundamental difference betweenblack hat and white hat SEO.

Black Hat SEO Tactics That Could Hurt Your Site

Hello.

My name is Emma North, and I'm a digitalmarketing executive here at Koozai.

Today, I'd like to talk to you a littlebit about some black hat techniques that you absolutely must avoid.

Now these are the sorts of things that used to be commonplace and perfectlyacceptable ways to achieve search engine optimisation, but that's notthe case anymore.

With recent Google algorithm updates, such as Penguinand Panda, these are the sorts of activities that will be penalised with a rankingpenalty.

So first of all, we've got paid links.

Ifyou've ever paid for a link to appear on someone's site, linking back toyour own site, then you should get these removed.

They appear very unnaturalto Google, and you're likely to suffer a ranking penalty if you haven'talready.

If you haven't already, that doesn't mean that you won't have onein the future.

So it's important to get these removed as soon as possible.

Generic directories, similarly these are veryunnatural to Google.

They are pages full of links to other sites, and ifyou've got a link there, Google will see that as an unnatural attempt to gamethe rankings.

Google holds you responsible for the inbound links to yoursite.

So it's important you review the link profile as a whole and identifyany links that could be considered unnatural and get those removed.

Contact the site owners.

Do anything you can to get them removed.

If you can't do that, and you've made everyeffort to get them removed, there is now on Google a disavow tool thatyou can use, but you do need evidence you've tried to remove the linksyourself.

Google disavow tool basically says to Google, "Don't take theselinks into consideration when you're ranking my site.

" So try to get themremoved on your own, and then if you've got evidence that you tried andthat didn't work, try the Google disavow tool.

But get these sorts of unnaturallinks removed at all costs.

Generally with links, if it looks like a badneighbourhood, it probably is, and you don't want to be there.

Next, we've got cloaking and more specificallyhidden content.

Cloaking is a technique where you hide content from theuser that is just specifically for the search engines.

You're trying to gamethe rankings by telling the search engines one thing about your site,when, in fact, it's really not about that.

Hidden content, in particular,Google is very clever now at finding this.

If you've got content writteninto the script that's not on page and is hidden from the user, Google willidentify that, and you may suffer a ranking penalty as a result of theGoogle Panda update.

It's important the content on the whole of yoursite is written for the user.

It needs to be informative, and it needs to beon page.

Don't have any hidden content in the script of your site.

If you'vegot it, get it removed.

Next, we've got keyword stuffing.

Now, it'sessential that you have some keywords on your site for the user as wellas the search engines.

But it is important that your contentisn't littered with them.

Make sure that the content is written forthe user, that it makes sense and reads well, and the rest will follow.

In thelong run, that will be rewarded.

Anything that's littered with keywordsis not going to rank in the long term because you may get hit witha ranking penalty as a result of the Panda update.

Similarly, Meta keyword tags; every page canstill have a Meta keyword tag, but they're not really used by Google anymore.

That's not to say they won't in the future, but other search engines douse them.

So don't stuff them full of dozens or hundreds keywords, justhalf a dozen relevant keywords is more than enough for each page to ensure thatyou're targeting the right keywords for those search engines.

Last thing we've got doorway pages.

Theseare not used so much anymore, but there are still people out there who willtell you can get benefit from them.

Similar to cloaking, this is a techniqueused to hide content from the user.

It's a page designed specificallyfor Google.

So they're usually stuffed full of keywords.

Google will sussout what you're doing if you try to use these pages.

Don't do it.

If you'reusing any of these pages that are designed only for the search engines andthey're full of keywords, get rid of them.

It's not going to serve you anybenefit in the long run.

So that's a few black hat techniques on thesurface.

Now that list isn't by any means conclusive.

There are hundreds oftechniques people use to try and game the system.

I guess the rule of thumbis write for the user.

Don't try to do anything to game Google becausethe quick wins won't be worth it in the long run, and you will suffer a rankingpenalty if you get caught.

White hat techniques are the way to achievenatural rankings, and continue doing that will mean you will continue stayingin the rankings and Google will continue to value your site.

Black Hat SEO – Mortal Sins to Avoid in SEO

MARK: Hi, Iím Mark Steinbrueck, and thisis Kurt Steinbrueck.

Com, and on this video weíre going to talk aboutblack hat SEO, or search engine optimization, and what the mortal sins to avoid in SEO.

This seems pretty scary, Kurt.

(laughs) Very scary.

KURT: Black hat, what is black hat SEO? Well,the term ìblack hat,î just so you know, is really a reference to the old TV Westernswhere the bad guy would always wear a black hat, and a white hat for the good guy.

Sothatís what itís referring to, people breaking the rules and all this kind of stuff, to tryto get ahead in the search engines.

Generally speaking, thereís usually nothingmorally wrong with whatís going on.

If youíre hacking peopleís sites, okay, thatís anissue.

But usually itís more of a risk-reward type thing.

The real risk here is that theseare things that the search engines have said, ìLook, if you do these things, weíre basicallygoing to treat you like youíre trying to manipulate us, and weíre just going to eitherpenalize you or kick you out.

î So imagine your site no longer in Google, and what thatwill do to your site.

Thatís the risk that youíre taking with these things.

Personally, I think theyíre things to avoid.

The trick is that theyíre also things that tend to work, and thatís really the seductionof it, right? If it didnít work, then nobody would even try to do it.

But they do work,and so people are lured into doing it because you can usually get quicker results, betterresults sometimes.

Itís just, if they find you, you lose everything.

Thatís the riskthat you take.

Itís kind of like if you cheat on a test.

If you can get it away with it and you have all the answers, you got 100 on the test.

Thatís great.

Take the morals out of it.

(laughs) But if the teacher comes by and seesyou with your little sheet, then you failed the test, you got a zero, and probably ñ MARK: Kicked out of school.

KURT: Yeah.

Got in trouble with your parents,all that kind of stuff.

So thatís really what weíre talking about.

Weíre going tolook at some of the specific things with black hat.

Itís not everything, but itís justsomething to give you an idea of some of the major things to look out for.

The first one is keyword stuffing.

What thisis, usually it happens when somebody realizes that they can rank better in the search enginesbecause they used keywords on their site, and then they just went overboard.

They tookit too far.

So either theyíve just created a block of text that just had every keywordthey could think of, and they stuck it on the bottom of their page, or maybe they usedone keyword but they kept adding more and more and more and more.

Sometimes itís even a gradual thing.

Youstarted out and youíre like, ìWell, Iím not doing too well for this keyword, so Iímgoing to add it in on my page,î and then, ìIím still not doing as well, so Iím goingto add it a few more times,î and then after a few times of doing that, all of a suddenyou realize, ìIíve got this one keyword on here 50 times,î and itís not naturalat all.

It doesnít make any sense.

So when youíre just shoving all these keywordsin, thatís something that the search engines look for, and they can certainly penalizeyou for it.

Another thing is whatís called cloaking.

What cloaking is, is basically any time that you show the search engines different contentthan what youíre showing users.

This can be done in a couple of different ways.

Oneway is thereís HTML little coding tricks where you can actually determine if the personviewing your site is a Google bot or a person, like a real person or is it a search enginerobot, and deliver different content.

So youíre showing the search engines one thing, youíreshowing the people another thing.

Sometimes this is done for semi-legitimatereasons.

Maybe you want to show people something that looks like graphics, and the search enginescanít read that, so youíre like ìIíll just show the search engines all this realcontent, but the people I want to show graphics.

î Search engines still donít like it, evenif you think that thereís a legitimate reason to do it.

Sometimes itís a very illegitimate reason,and weíve had people who showed content to the search engines that was maybe about automotivestuff, and then the people go and click on the link and itís a gambling site or something.

Itís just completely different.

So whether it seems legitimate or not, you really wantto be showing the search engines the same content that youíre showing people.

Thatíswhat they want you to do, and thatís how you should do it.

Thereís two other ways that people cloakI want to mention, because these are actually more common.

One is to try to hide text bymaking it the same color as the background.

So youíre like, ìOkay, I donít really wantto show people this really optimized text that has all my keywords in it, so Iím goingto make it so they canít see it because itís the same color as the background, but thesearch engines will still be able to read it.

î Well, search engines can read colorstoo, so they know when youíre doing that.

The other thing is to hide it behind imagesand things like that, so you put the text in there, then you use some little codingtrick so that an image is displayed on top of it.

Thatís another thing.

They can usuallydetect that as well.

But just donít try to hide content.

Donít try to cloak things likethat.

Thatís bad news.

Another thing that happens is buying links.

Buying links is a pretty popular thing to do for a black hat thing, because links arereally very important in SEO.

When we first started out with search engines, everyonewas kind of trading links, because they found that that could help.

Then the search enginessaid, ìWeíre not going to count those anymore.

î So then people started buying links.

Thisis something that the search engines really started to crack down on.

There are ways todo it, because there are legitimate reasons to buy links, but if you donít follow themethods and the standards that the search engines give, then theyíll see it as youíretrying to manipulate their rankings.

Basically they say mark the links by identifyingthem as a paid link.

Just having something sponsored or whatever on it.

And then alsoadding a nofollow tag.

So if you do those, then theyíre fine with it, because youírebeing open with them.

Youíre saying, ìLook, I bought these links, but Iím not tryingto mess with your rankings at all.

I want this because I wanted that link there.

î Theyírefine with that.

But if you start to do it without those things, then theyíre goingto look at it as youíre trying to manipulate things and they can punish you.

They can alsopunish the site thatís selling you those links.

MARK: Yeah, thatís the interesting thing,is theyíll target both the selling site as well as the buying site and penalize bothof you.

KURT: Yeah, so itís dangerous for both.

Andbuying links is really just one of many linking schemes.

Thatís the next thing.

Itís kindof an all-inclusive concept, but thereís just a lot of link schemes out there, thingsthat people try to come up with to get links that are not legitimately gotten.

Theyírenot really people saying, ìHey, I love this content on this site so Iím going to linkto it,î itís just other ways of getting links.

Sometimes itís spammy blog comments.

We seethat a lot.

I have a couple of blogs, and Iím constantly deleting those.

Sometimespeople will create forum profiles, not to actually do anything on the forum; they justcreate the profile and put a link on there.

There are things called link pyramids wherethey create all these spammy links and they go through all these different sites thatlink to each other and link to each other, and they end up with a couple of sites atthe bottom that then link to your site.

The idea is that somehow the search engines wonítlook far enough down the pyramid to realize that all these spammy links are really justdirected at your site.

They can figure that out.

So thereís just a lot of things like thatthat you have to watch out for.

A lot of times, the people that are offering these thingsare not very forthcoming about that, so when youíre talking to someone about a link opportunity,if you will, a lot of times if you start hearing things like, ìHey, weíve put these thingsin place to protect you or to buffer you from the link building strategies that weíre doing,îthat should tell you that what theyíre doing is something that could get you in trouble.

MARK: Yeah, thatís a red flag.

KURT: Yeah.

If youíre doing legitimate linkbuilding, you donít have to buffer.

You donít have to protect yourself.

You want the searchengines to know those links are coming from you.

MARK: Yeah.

I think it brings up a good pointthat if an organization that does SEO for you is engaging in the black hat SEO practices,they donít have anything to worry about.

Itís all going to come back on you, the websiteowner, or the website itself.

So if your website were to get caught and banned or penalized,itís not going to have any effect on the company thatís performing that.

And you mayor may not have known that they were engaging in these kind of practices, so itís veryimportant for you to try to listen, as Kurt said, very carefully to the practices thatthey do.

Really, when it comes down to it, those kindof practices, those black hat techniques, will only work in the short-term, becauseGoogle and Yahoo and Bing have thousands of people that are paid to go out and manuallylook at websites that are doing these kind of things, that are hiding text or engagingother kind of black hat practices.

So they are very good at doing what they do, verygood at finding people or websites that are engaging in these kind of practices, and soit is a very short-term gain that you will get, and as a result you could have some verylong-term problems.

KURT: Yeah, absolutely.

There were some recentupdates when Google was going against a lot of these things, there were a lot of companiesthat lost everything.

And one other link scheme that I want to mention, just because itísbeen pretty popular lately, is something called private blog networks, which are basicallya network of thousands of blogs that you can buy into, and you then submit your own content,if you will, that can have some of your links on it.

The blogs are not really intended for users.

They try to tell you to put in legitimate content and everything, but generally speaking,itís usually a lot of spammy stuff that just has links.

But itís something that the searchengines have very specifically said ìDonít do this.

î Theyíve actually taken down severalof the private blog networks.

They have infiltrated them and figured out what they all are andjust wiped them out.

MARK: Wow.

KURT: So itís something to avoid.

MARK: Yeah.

So as a summary, black hat SEO,the mortal sins to avoid: keyword stuffing, cloaking, buying links, and just overall linkschemes are things that you want to avoid.

As Kurt mentioned before, these are just afew of the many different things, black hat techniques that people engage in to try togain the system that you should try to avoid.

Black hat, what is black hat SEO? Well, theterm "black hat," just so you know, is really a reference to the old TV Westerns where thebad guy would always wear a black hat, and a white hat for the good guy.

So that's whatit's referring to, people breaking the rules and all this kind of stuff, to try to getahead in the search engines.

Generally speaking, there's usually nothingmorally or ethically wrong with what's going on.

If you're hacking people's sites, okay,that's an issue.

But usually it's more of a risk-reward type thing.

The real risk hereis that these are things that the search engines have said, "Look, if you do these things,we're basically going to treat you like you're trying to manipulate us, and we're just goingto either penalize you or kick you out.

" So imagine your site no longer in Google, andwhat that will do to your site.

That's the risk that you're taking with these things.

Personally, I think they're things to avoid.

The trick is that they're also things thattend to work, and that's really the seduction of it, right? If it didn't work, then nobodywould even try to do it.

But they do work, and so people are lured into doing it becauseyou can usually get quicker results, better results sometimes.

It's just, if they findyou, you lose everything.

And then alsoadding a nofollow tag.

So if you do those, then they're fine with it, because you'rebeing open with them.

You're saying, "Look, I bought these links, but I'm not trying tomess with your rankings at all.

I want this because I wanted that link there.

" They'refine with that.

But if you start to do it without those things, then they're going tolook at it as you're trying to manipulate things and they can punish you.

They can alsopunish the site that's selling you those links.

Yeah, that's the interesting thing, is they'lltarget both the selling site as well as the buying site and penalize both of you.

Yeah, so it's dangerous for both.

And buying links is really:Just one of many Linking Schemes.

That's the next thing.

It's kind of an all-inclusiveconcept, but there's just a lot of link schemes out there, things that people try to comeup with to get links that are not legitimately gotten.

They're not really people saying,"Hey, I love this content on this site so I'm going to link to it," it's just otherways of getting links.

Sometimes it's spammy blog comments.

We seethat a lot.

I have a couple of blogs, and I'm constantly deleting those.

Sometimes peoplewill create forum profiles, not to actually do anything on the forum; they just createthe profile and put a link on there.

There are things called link pyramids wherethey create all these spammy links and they go through all these different sites thatlink to each other and link to each other, and they end up with a couple of sites atthe bottom that then link to your site.

The idea is that somehow the search engines won'tlook far enough down the pyramid to realize that all these spammy links are really justdirected at your site.

They can figure that out.

So there's just a lot of things like that that you have to watch out for.

A lot of times,the people that are offering these things are not very forthcoming about that, so whenyou're talking to someone about a link opportunity, if you will, a lot of times if you start hearingthings like, "Hey, we've put these things in place to protect you or to buffer you fromthe link building strategies that we're doing," that should tell you that what they're doingis something that could get you in trouble.

Yeah, that's a red flag.

Yeah.

If you're doing legitimate link building, you don't have to buffer.

You don't have toprotect yourself.

You want the search engines to know those links are coming from you.

Yeah.

I think it brings up a good point that if an organization that does SEO for you isengaging in the black hat SEO practices, they don't have anything to worry about.

It's allgoing to come back on you, the website owner, or the website itself.

So if your websitewere to get caught and banned or penalized, it's not going to have any effect on the companythat's performing that.

And you may or may not have known that they were engaging inthese kind of practices, so it's very important for you to try to listen, as Kurt said, verycarefully to the practices that they do.

Really, when it comes down to it, those kindof practices, those black hat techniques, will only work in the short-term, becauseGoogle and Yahoo and Bing have thousands of people that are paid to go out and manuallylook at websites that are doing these kind of things, that are hiding text or engagingother kind of black hat practices.

So they are very good at doing what they do, verygood at finding people or websites that are engaging in these kind of practices, and soit is a very short-term gain that you will get, and as a result you could have some verylong-term problems.

Yeah, absolutely.

There were some recent updateswhen Google was going against a lot of these things, there were a lot of companies thatlost everything.

And one other link scheme that I want to mention, just because it'sbeen pretty popular lately, is something called private blog networks, which are basicallya network of thousands of blogs that you can buy into, and you then submit your own content,if you will, that can have some of your links on it.

The blogs are not really intended for users.

They try to tell you to put in legitimatecontent and everything, but generally speaking, it's usually a lot of spammy stuff that justhas links.

But it's something that the search engines have very specifically said "Don'tdo this.

" They've actually taken down several of the private blog networks.

They have penetratedthem and figured out what they all are and just wiped them out.

Wow.

So it's something to avoid.

Yeah.

So as a summary, SEO: Black and White Hats – What Are They? And the mortal sinsto avoid are keyword stuffing, cloaking, buying links, and just overall link schemes.

As Kurt mentioned before, these are just a few of the many different things, black hattechniques that people engage in to try to gain the system that you should try to avoid.

This (Simple) White Hat SEO Strategy=59% More Traffic

– A few months ago I getthis email out of the blue.

The email said, "Hey Brian, "When read your skyscraper technique post "a couple months ago, I was intrigued.

"I had recently taken over SEO at our blog "that was receiving verylittle organic traffic.

"After many hours spentcreating, promoting "and manually link building,this happened on Monday.

So your first step is to find content that's already rankingfor your target keyword.

Because Emil's business sellshealthy snacks for offices, he realized that a keywordlike "wellness program ideas" is something that histarget customers search for.

So he googled "employeewellness program ideas", "wellness programs" and"corporate wellness programs" to get a sense of whatwas already out there.

And he noticed that the content that was ranking on Google's first page had the same flaws.

For example, four outof the top 10 results for "employee wellness ideas" were PDFs.

Needless to say, mostpeople rather read content in a blog post than in a PDF.

Emil also noticed that thelist of wellness program ideas lacked important details.

In fact, most were literallyjust lists of ideas without any informationon how to execute them.

Emil also saw that thecontent on the first page lacked multimedia, like images, videos, charts and screenshots.

According to a study by Skyword, content with at least one image gets an average of 94%more social media views than content without an image.

That's why it's so importantto use images in your content.

Last but not least, but Emil noticed that the content on thefirst page was boring.

Obviously, employee wellness programs isn't as interesting assomething like cute cats.

But that doesn't mean thatyour content has to be boring like this.

As I'll show you in aminute, Emil worked hard to make sure that his contentwas fun and interesting.

But first, it's time for me to show you step number two of theskyscraper technique, which is to create something better than the content you just found.

Despite what you may haveheard about white hat SEO, first page rankings have nothing to do with keeping your site updatedwith fresh quality content.

Really.

Instead, your ability to rank in Google depends on two things.

Thing one.

Create something thatdeserves to rank number one.

Thing two.

Promote that content.

Seriously, that's it.

Question is: how do you create content thatdeserves to be number one? Let me answer that byshowing you exactly how Emil executed step number two ofthe skyscraper technique.

First, Emil listed more programideas that any other guide.

Most of the content that Emil found listed about 10 wellness program ideas.

But Emil knew that there're way more than just 10 wellnessprogram ideas out there.

So he set out to lista whopping 120 ideas.

Unfortunately, Emil realizedthat listing out 120 ideas was easier said than done.

So Emil asked his team toget employee wellness experts to contribute ideas to the post.

And many of these expertswere more than happy to lend a hand.

Emil also reached out tobloggers in the wellness space, and they hooked Emil upwith some amazing ideas that he could use in his content.

And as you'll see in a minute, these expert contributionsgenerated lots of shares and traffic to Emil's post.

Next Emil added multimedia to his content.

Like I mentioned earlier,most of the articles ranking on page one had zero images.

And Emil knew that publishinga post with lots of multimedia would be a huge competitive advantage.

That's why he included aton of high quality images and helpful videos.

Finally, Emil made surehis content was fun, upbeat and interesting.

Because the truth aboutcontent marketing is this.

Whether you write about lifeinsurance or life hacking, your content simply can't be boring.

Emil knew this and that's why he made sure his content was fun and compelling.

And once he edited hispost, Emil hit Publish, and his content was live.

The end result – 121 EmployeeWellness Program Ideas For Your Office.

Now that Emil's post was live, it was time to sit back, relax and let the back links roll in, right? Wrong.

Like you, Emil realized thathitting the Publish button was just the beginning.

For your content to stand out today you need to actively promote it.

Which leads us to step number three of the skyscraper technique process which is to promote your content.

Yes, publishing greatcontent is important.

And that's why Emil spent so much time on a single post.

With that, here're thefour promotional strategies that Emil used to get the word out about his new piece of content.

First, Emil reached out to influencers to let them know about his post before he even published it.

I call this pre-outreach.

Specifically, Emil found blogs that wrote about workplace wellness and sent them a heads upabout his upcoming post.

When the bloggers said,"Sure, send it over," Emil sent them a heads up.

This pre-outreach led todozens of social shares but also a nice contextual back link.

Next Emil used somethingcalled the content roadshow.

Here's how it works.

First, Emil used Google to find blogs that wrote about employeewellness, human resources and other related topics.

And when he found a highquality piece of content around one of those topics,he emailed the author.

This technique also led toa high quality back link.

Once he was done emailing bloggers, Emil reached out to brandsthat he mentioned in his posts.

For example, Emil mentionedauthority nutrition in his content.

So he sent them a message to let them know that they were featured.

And as you can see here, these brands were more thanhappy to share Emil's post with their audience.

Finally, Emil hit up theexperts that contributed ideas to his post.

Remember when I told you that Emil asked a bunch ofworkplace wellness experts to contribute an idea.

Here's an example.

Well, when the post went live,Emil let the experts know that he used their idea in his post.

Not only were the experts happy to share Emil'scontent in social media, but one of them evenlinked to Emil's post.

There you have it, the three step process that led to a first page ranking and a 59% boost in organic traffic.

Black Hat SEO vs White Hat SEO

Today, I want to talk about black hat SEOand white hat SEO.

What is it and should you do black hat orwhite hat SEO.

Basically, everything that is black hat SEO is against Google's guidelines.

Everything that is white hat SEO is according to the guidelines.

You could also say; everythingthat is white hat is like future-proofed.

Everything that black hat, you could stilldo, but you have to know that this could end very soon.

What I mean by that is that; tactics thatyou're probably using or you're trying to use in the moment could still work in themoment but, if the next Penguin update goes out or if the other big Google update go out,then it could be that you are not ranking anymore for any keyword terms.

You have tokeep it in mind.

If you're still thinking about doing some shady stuff or some blackhat stuff, then just do it for your own projects or just do it for some affiliate stuff orstuff like that where it doesn't really matter when you burn your domain.

Really keep that mind.

If you work on yourbusiness, try to really do clean work.

Try to avoid stuff that isn't according to theGoogle guideline.

Actually, these days, it's not so easy anymore or, these days, a lotof stuff doesn't work anymore.

Very funny, last week actually, I saw a website wherea client submitted a sample to me telling me that they are hiding key words on the page.

First of all, I couldn't find the keywords.

Then, I used the mouse and marked the page,and I could see there was a big actually space – a black space – and they wrote black textin that area.

Stuff like that doesn't work anymore.

Google now is really rendering the websites;that means, they know exactly what is on the page, what does the user see.

They make a,kind of, screenshot and they just take that in consideration.

These days, I would say,most of the black hat stuff doesn't work anymore.

I would also not recommend to go out and buildthis link networks, your own networks because, remember, it doesn't make sense to have alot of links.

These days, you need high quality links and powerful links.

If you have satellitesout there, most of the time they don't have any power.

It's a lot of work for you to setthem up, to control them, to distribute content, and whatever and it doesn't make any sense.

I wouldn't do that anymore.

If you look at the very professional blackhats in the moment, what they do is, they hack strong websites – so they hack universitywebsites, they hack other websites – they set up a sub-page on that website, and thenthey try to link to their own websites to make that quite strong.

I wouldn't recommendto do that, of course, because it's against the law.

You shouldn't participate in stufflike that.

I just want to let you know that, if you are a affiliate or if you're doingprojects for yourself, it's totally fine to try a lot of stuff.

Of course, don't do anythingthat is against the law.

You could try stuff that is against Google's guidelines if youare aware or if you keep in mind that that could be a very short time solution.

If you do something for your business, it'svery important that everything is according the guidelines.

If you are a business ownerand you are employing or you are getting an agency.

First of all, it would be veryimportant that you control the people that work for you.

If you are a business owner,you need to know also what an employee is doing for you.

If he's doing SEO for you,then you should sometimes check what he's doing; what kind of links is he building,how is he trying to gain rankings.

Also, the same is actually true if you have a SEO agency,for example, then you really want to know what they're doing.

These days, really tell them they have tosend you all the reports, all they did everyday or for months or whatever.

I suggest thatyou're getting at least once a month a report where they show you everything they did.

It'snot some black box – they're not using some magic SEO out there to get you ranked.

Youreally have to know what they're doing because, otherwise, you could be at risk.

If this agencyis doing something that is against the guidelines, it could get a penalty and that will affectyour business.

It's very important.

Also, if you have people working for you insideof your company, you also should be very careful that they're going into the right direction.

Should you build nofollow links in a white hat SEO campaign?

Hi guys, It's David James from Business GrowthDigital Marketing.

And in this video, I want to talk about thevalue of doing link building even on sites where you don't get the complete SEO benefit.

Now, I know I juxtapose myself just by sayingthat.

There's more value that you can get with certainsites than just trying to get a link to rank.

So I will show you in this example with oneof the sites that links on their site to one of my other websites which is called Lollivia.

Com.

What has happened here is I wanted to getmore traffic and get a better ranking for the keyword Cambodia backpacking.

Now the actual site doesn't rank anywhere.

Although it is just page 1.

It doesn't rank on the first page anyway.

What I did when I was prospecting was I waslooking for any sites where I could get a bit more exposure.

So the first site that I came across was indietraveller.

Co.

Now, I'm just going to jump over to the siteand it is an actual blog where they have written a really, really good guide.

The guys name is Marek and he is a reallywell travelled person and if you are into travelling, then definitely follow him.

But, what was interesting was since the linkhas been live.

So that is from back in, let's say Septemberof 2015.

Since then, there has been 621 people thathave come from that site alone.

So that's quite interesting.

Now I am just going to go back to the siteand I am going to show you the link.

Check out the guide.

You will see that it is very thorough.

So if you are looking to go to Cambodia, checkit out.

I am just going to scroll all of the way downto the comments section.

There are 14 comments and I actually commentedin one of them.

And what I had done was I had left a positivecomment saying that my wife and I had travelled to Cambodia and that Ihad written a post aboutit and I shared a comment with a link back to the post.

He accepted the comment and it is live onhis site.

But as a result, we have received quite afew visitors to the site every month.

Now I am going to inspect this.

The first thing that you will see is it isa direct link.

But the link is a nofollow link.

So there isn't any direct SEO benefit fromthe link directly.

But, it does get the site traffic, which isvaluable and it allows the content to be discovered.

In the future, it could lead onto other linkbuilding opportunities where I will get links naturally.

But the purpose of this video is to let youknow that if you d link building and you do something like leave a blog comment on a websitewhere it uses the rel=nofollow attribute, then you should still get a link from it torelevant content on your site to boost your audience and to create an opportunity to getnatural links in the future.

Bala: Fantastic, alright so are you readyfor the rapid fire? Sameer : Shoot away.

Bala : Fantastic what kind of SEO Practitionerare you – black, white, grey? Sameer : I believe, if we say black hat bordersof the illegal aspects, then I will say I am a grey hat.

Bala : Ok, alright then why don’t give usan example of grey hat tactic? Sameer: Hmm… Ok, that’s a good one but I’m supposedto make this quick.

I don’t think buying links is illegal andI think that it’s perfectly valid so I would say my links is kind of grey hat but I knowit works.

Bala : Interesting then why don’t you giveus an example about black hat tactics also? Sameer : Hmm….

Now as I said, I think black hat means totallyillegal out there so I know, I have seen a few people who have actually hacked someones’site, put a link out there, I mean created a new page on their site got parasite hostingand a link from an existing page which is ranking well to that page.

So ya its that hard.

Bala : That’s hard core black hat I agreewith that.

Ok, so another question is do you think Googleshould display the Page Ranks again? Sameer : It’s a hard question.

When it was there, I think its, I would loveto have Page Rank back may be I know they are not going to show it again but I wouldlove to have Page Rank back from on a scale of 0 to 100 and they would actually revealthe score in decimal formats of 95.

8 versus a site which is 73 point something so I wouldactually know.

But I know, they are not going to and whenit was there it just built that whole atmosphere of buying links based on Page Rank so I amnot sure if it’s good thing to bring back but there are replacements metric like DomainAuthority out there.

So, I’d love to have it back why not moredata the better I would say because data is a marketers’ dream on SEO guys think.

Bala : Absolutely I remember, you know, attimes when Page Rank was the metric for everyone.

Sameer : Totally.

When I started off, Page Rank was the onlymetric we looked at.

So, yes.

Bala : Ok.

So, ok now here is it what is important likebacklink or content? Sameer : Hmm.

Without content, you can’t build that manybacklinks and without backlinks you can’t really survive.

No you can, I would say because of contentmarketing these days you might not even need backlinks.

I think content is a more solid foundationbecause you have social now a days to support you.

Backlinks is one way to rank on Google andBing, content first, backlink second.

Bala : True.

Like, if you have real good content obviouslypeople would start first.

Sameer : There are many ways to promote yourcontent, backlink is just one tactic of improving your rankings.

Bala : Alright ok so is there any rankingfactor google considers and many people don’t talk about? Sameer: Hmm.

Ok this is just one theory, I have been havingover the last few days.

So, everyone knows that links are super importantand Google measures them on quality of the site to getting the links from relevance butI’ve just been hypothesizing in my head that I think Google has, they collect a lotof data from Chrome, Google Analytics and I think, they collect lot of click streamdata as well so if you are getting a link from a site and how many people are actuallyclicking on that link to your site so the traffic that you get from a link to your sitecould potentially be a factor.

Because I think I am suspecting that if Googlehas to really truly determine the quality of a link, if people are not clicking enoughfrom that link then may be that link is not as worthy as it should be or not as relevantas I think.

The true measurement of how high quality orhighly relevant link is would be based on how many people actually click on that linkso now that is just a hypothesis, they never talked about it or at least not that I knowof so purely theoretical but ya my thinking.

Bala : This is interesting.

I just want to add one more thing like youknow if I have to kind of work upon that particular tactic, what I should be doing? Sameer : If you want to take advantage ofthat of course you could possibly try to simulate clicks based on links that you already havebut this is purely theoretical so I am not sure if it works but ya of course the bestway is to get links for the purpose of traffic and actually those links may not be somethingyou can get why would require actually and that’s what Hoogle will like us to say.

Bala : Fantastic, alright so what is thatone skill the marketer must have? Sameer : I think creativity over anythingelse Bala : Creativity.

What I thought, even you will be talking aboutpsychology, because behavioral psychology is the most important thing for a marketer,don’t you think? Sameer : Of course understanding buyer psyche,what goes through a buyer’s mind, I think is necessary but now there is let’s saya marketer job is to stand out from the crowd so as much as you can understand your buyerif you don’t know how to stand out from the crowd, I think you need creativity forthat because there are many people out there you may think they are marketers but if youcannot help your brand stand out from the crowd for that you need to be creative asmuch as you understand and if you are a boring marketer, I am not sure you will be that successful.

Bala : Perfect OK this is little bit personalto you what is that one skill, you think, you need to improve upon? Sameer : In the digital marketing space, definitelyI am low on IQ on social media.

It’s not a space that I have covered thatwell and I have been so much into SEO that I have ignored that aspect, that’s an areathat I really need improving on so but ya we are working on it.

I know we are experimenting with podcast videos,Facebook and everything out there so its a learning process and I think, its an experimentbut work in progress.

Bala : Tell me about irony and you have youknow one of the best Facebook analytics and Twitter analytics in your software.

Sameer : Ironic I know but yes.
